Mount Vernon

I am covering two visits to Mount Vernon in this post so there will be a lot of pictures. Last summer when our good friends Adam and Camille were here we bought season passes. Every time we go it is a different experience. There is so much to do and see at Mount Vernon. It has become one of our favorite places to visit out here.

Here we are in front of the Mansion. I asked Kaylee why she was pulling such a funny face and she said it was because she had water in her mouth. :)

While we were there some workers were shearing sheep.

On the forest trails.

On the farm. Mount Vernon is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been.

Each year George Washington provided his slaves with the following clothing:

Men:
One jacket, two pairs of breeches, two shirts, one pair of stockings, and one pair of shoes.

Women:
One jacket, two petticoats, two shifts, one pair of stockings, and one pair of shoes.

This is what George Washington fed his slaves every day. Can you imagine eating cornmeal and fish everyday?

Kaylee was excited to see that the picture her cousin colored was still hanging up on the wall in the Hands-on history room.

The kids all dressed up in the Hands-on history room.

Kaylee always loves to play with the dolls, the doll house, and the tea set.

The kids waiting by the Wharf for the cruise.

We time we took a 45 minute cruise on the Potomac River. The weather and scenery were beautiful.

A view of the back of Mount Vernon from the cruise boat.

A view of Fort Washington from the cruise boat.

The kids enjoying some popcorn during the cruise.

Kaylee loves to pose! Here are a few of my favorite shots of her. Kaden avoids pictures so that is why I don't have as many of him.

A week before this visit we went to Mount Vernon with my brothers and their families. Here are some of my favorite pictures from that visit.

The kids in front of the statues in the orientation center.

The kids each got an adventure map. Here are the girls planning out their day.

The kids had fun solving the puzzles to earn a smashed Mount Vernon penny souvenir.

Brandon got to read George Washington's Prayer at a grave ceremony.

The kids in the Education Center.

Kaylee playing with a tea set in the Hands-on-history room.

Kaden put this little log cabin together.

Here are George, Martha, Patsy, and Jacky. Patsy and Jacky were from Martha's first marriage.

Brooklyn and Kaylee in front of Martha Washington's dress, shoes, and jewelry.

The kids LOVED being with their cousins. Here are Kaden and Maddux watching a video inside of the education center.

Here are Brooklyn and Kaylee resting together on a bench.

How cool! I feel like I am visiting all these places just from your blog! Thanks for taking me on a history tour! I have no idea when we will make it back there, so this is perfect for now. I love your kids' pictures together! They look like they are best friends!

I think my favorite picture is the one of Kaden and Maddux with their arms around each other. I love getting pictures like that--showing the sweet feelings between cousins!

Oh my, I have got to get a trip planned out to see you guys. It looks like we need to bring the kids too! How much longer are you going to be there? I have heard that it might not be to much longer. I need to know so I can start saving, and planning.

Olivia,

We would love to have you guys come out here! Geoff is still looking for a job so we aren't sure how much longer we will be here. The summer time gets really hot and humid. If we are still around here this fall you should plan to come then. It is still beautiful and the weather is a lot more enjoyable.

I loved seeing your camping trip and the beach scenes. I saw how big Kaylee's sea shells were. We don't have that size at Bear Lake. Love, Grandma Dew
